Since the 80s the European Community has subsidized projects related to the conservation of natural resources in member states by the fund
LIFE-Nature .
We hope to protect and conserve those SCI, Sites of Community Importance, which are included in the plan
Natura 2000 Network
One of these places is Parga-Ladra-Támoga SCI one of the most unique water ecosystems in the Atlantic region in the Iberian Peninsula, which includes the main
river and marsh mediums which make up the upper basin of the river Miño, which has been declared by the Consellería de Medio Ambiente de la Xunta de Galicia as a Special Protection Area of Natural Values status.
The land which is included in this basin together with its mountainous surroundings has been declared by
UNESCO in 2002, a
Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve,
the only reserve which exists in Galicia, and it is the second biggest as regards area in the Iberian Peninsula.
The area taken up by the SCI has taken advantage of the programme LIFE-Nature through this project: Parga-Ladra-Támoga SCI: The recovery of woodland prone to swamping and its distrophic lake area for the period 2001- 2006, which was granted to the INLUDES by the European Community, INLUDES being the autonomous organism which depends on the Excelentísima Diputación Provincial de Lugo and which has also as a partner and cofinancer The Consellería de Medio Ambiente de la Xunta de Galicia, and it also depends on a research group from the University of Santiago for collaboration to develop and follow up projects.
